May 2025 “My Holdings Update”: Buying BuyBuyBaby (Through BYOD).

Portfolio Performance

This last month or so has been a complete rollercoaster for me … and really the whole market. I’m actually pleasantly surprised that the portfolio is only down around 1-2% for the year — it could definitely be worse.

I did a little more buying and selling than the portfolio reflects on the surface. Earlier in the month, based on the United States announcing tariffs, I quickly trimmed some positions, mostly retail related, that I thought could be impacted the most. Although I’m still uncertain, when I eventually gained a little more confidence, I bought some of the same positions back, many for cheaper than I sold, though not all. For example, I bought back some shares of Crocs for more than I sold them.

Highlights

A couple of positions I would highlight — YALA and BYON. YALA’s share price has been popping lately — up over 30% over the last month.

Then I acquired BYON. BYON used to be Overstock but it changed its name. Notably, it owns Overstock, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, and now it recently added BuyBuyBaby.

I acquired BYON based on how cheap it is and with the hope that they will not delude shares any further. I listened to the conference call, and I was excited to hear the leadership of Marcus Lemonis. He sounded confident on the call and said that the worst part had passed and was behind the company. Lemonis’ background is encouraging also. On his show, “The Profit,” he helps businesses turnaround. If he can advise others on how to turn their businesses around, surely he should be able to turn BYON around, particularly now that they own BuyBuyBaby (which was still a profitable part of the Bed, Bath, and Beyond company before bankruptcy).

I think it is possible for BYOD to be profitable again and perhaps even open up some flagship stores, although I would never expect them to return BuyBuyBaby to its previous physical store levels. I understand that I am “hopeful” and there is some speculation with investing here, which is why I only acquired a small position — currently 1.13% of the portfolio.
